Dr Shahid Mehmood

PhD MSc BEng (Gold Medallist) ProfMIMMM

He has a PhD in Computational Materials Engineering from Swansea University; a MSc in Project Management from Bournemouth University; and, a BEng in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, Pakistan, where he was the recipient of a gold medal for the best overall performance. In addition to managing the business he is also responsible for undertaking the day-to-day metallurgical investigations and analysis of materials for the company projects.


Dr Shahid Mehmood has a keen interest in the design, manufacture and testing of a wide range of engineering materials including:

  • Metals/alloys
  • Metallic powders
  • Additively manufactured components
  • Biomaterials
He has applied his knowledge to establish solutions to industrial problems / research questions in the fields of failure analysis; and, aspects of metallurgical engineering, including benchmarking, manufacturing, product development and material quality control.
Dr Mehmood has experience in the analysis of materials and their appropriate use in the design of products through the application of scientific experiments and computational models; specifically, the ANSYS software suite. Utilising these techniques, Dr Mehmood has been able to predict the performance of materials in specific design problems, allowing for part quality enhancement. He has disseminated the findings from his work, to successfully produce several peer reviewed research papers; the titles of which are listed on our website. Dr Shahid Mehmood is the founder of Mughal Materials Engineering. He is also a Senior Metallurgist and Composite Specialist for our company. Dr Mehmood has worked in the field of material engineering for over 12 years in various industries and research centres across Europe and Asia.   • As a Lab Manager at Exova Bridgwater in England (Jan 2017- June 2017), managing materials testing lab ensuring on time delivery to customers and maximising revenue for the business.
  • As a Composite Specialist in the Northern Ireland Advanced Engineering and Composites Centre in Belfast (2016-2017), designing, manufacturing and testing pressure vessels for aerospace applications
  • A Metallurgist Specialist at the College of Engineering, Swansea University in Wales (2011-2015), characterising materials for microstructure, chemical composition and physical properties
  • A Research Assistant at the National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy in Denmark (2009-2010), analysing and testing composites made of natural materials
  • A Production and Planning Manager at Grays of Cambridge Pak Ltd (2005-2008), a carbon-epoxy manufacturing facility of hockey sticks

Asset Integrity Consultant

·       Lead the delivery and implementation of Asset Integrity Standards for use within the Asset Integrity Management System (AIMS) that define all controls required to prevent a failure of critical equipment and infrastructure resulting in a Severity Level 4 or higher event.
·       Analysis of inclusions and materials quality related challenges in the aluminium alloys, BHP Billiton South Africa and Grandfield Technologies, Australia
·       Analysis of steel pipelines corrosion in the oil and gas industry, project supervised to the undergraduate students of Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne
·       Development of the corrosion resistant steel alloys, Silver City Mines Pty LTD, Melbourne, Australia
·       Conducted inspections for construction, installation, condition and operation, checks and tests vessel components, documents findings on inspection reports, ensures quality control and safety standards of operation are in place.
·       Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations and develop effective corrective strategies. Familiar with industry specific damage mechanisms and applicable inspection techniques for detecting and quantifying damage. Identified the process and economic impacts associated with equipment failures and operating reliability.
·       Ensured all pressure equipment mechanical integrity activities meet or exceed the requirements of corporate standards, plant inspection procedures and the Inspection Workflow Processes.
·       Ensured contractor's performance on activities related to inspection, NDT activities and compliance with Company contract requirements and all applicable codes, standards, policies, procedures and guidelines.
